A former county (previously called Forfarshire), Angus has since 1975 been a District in Tayside Region. The Earldom of Angus, one of the most ancient of Scotland, is now vested in the Dukedom of Hamilton.
Angus Tartan first appeared in Messrs W. & A. K. Johnston’s The Tartans of the Clans and Septs of Scotland, published in two volumes in 1906. Its origin is unknown and it is not clear whether or not it was originally intended as a family or district tartan.”
