The Earl’s Canvas, discovered on the back of a portrait of the second Earl of Mar this pattern dates to late 1500 or early 1600, it is speculated that it was probably a table cloth that was repurposed to the painting's canvas after its life of gracing tables was done. This pattern can be woven in 4, 8 and 14 harness variations. This pattern and weave structure predates the Jaquard loom!
